A useful SOP needs more than happy-path steps. Capture owner, decision rule, exception path, and evidence that closes each step.
Every step should answer
- Who owns this step right now?
- What decision is being made, and by what rule?
- What happens on the exception path?
- What evidence proves the step is done?
- Who receives the handoff next?
If a new person cannot run the process without filling gaps from memory, the documentation is incomplete.
When to escalate
If the process lives only in one person’s head, scoped SOP capture turns recordings and screenshots into an editable handoff.
